Venice Marco Polo Airport is getting bigger! The next phase of expansion starts on site

Following the recent inauguration of the Passenger Terminal refurbishment and extension (Lotto 1) of Venice Marco Polo Airport, One Works is pleased to announce the kick-off for the first phase of Lotto 2B, as part of the airports wider Master Plan project.   Phase one of the new airside extension, designed and engineered by One Works, will provide 3,500 square meters of new large and comfortable spaces to accommodate the strong growth in Extra Schengen passengers, which today accounts for 32% of the total traffic travelling through the airport, arriving at the ground floor and departing at the first floor, as well as the construction of a new bridge to support the additional passenger flow.   As with many airport projects, a quick and complex programme is required with the realization of the first phase in just 24 months. 80% of the works will be acheived in the first 300 days and then paused to open to the public in April 2019 for the high flow of passengers during the 2019 summer season, ensuring daily operations to the airport are not affected, Works will then re-start in October 2019 to complete by Summer 2020, ready for the next phase.    Giulio De Carli, One Works Managing Partner - In coherence with the previews extension, the project has been driven by the need to combine tradition and innovation in the best way, allowing a smooth dialogue between the iconic architectural features of the existing terminal with the new volumes characterized by more contemporary shapes and materials. In the interiors, the graphics recalls symbolically the voyage of Marco Polo, the places he has seen and the route he has followed, fil rouge of the airport decoration.

Design proposals released for Cagliari Football Club’s new home

One Works, together with J + S, are pleased to present their exciting proposal for Cagliari Football Club’s new home, which will replace the existing Sant ‘Elia stadium.    Announced at a recent press conference by Cagliari Calcio President, Tommaso Giulini, all three finalists were invited to showcase their proposals at a special exhibition at Sardinia Arena. Open to the public, the exhibition invites fans and the local community to give their feedback on the proposed designs.   In collaboration with Portuguese architects Gonçalo Byrne and João Nunes, along with Deerns and Studio Majowiecki, Italian firms J + S and One Works have proposed a stunnning design that successfully interprets and transforms the four main requests of Cagliari Calcio. To deliver:   1. a stadium that reflects the history and pride of a Sardinia that looks to the future 2. an unrivalled fan experience that is capable of attracting a wide range of visitors 3. a scheme that represents economic and environmental sustainability 4. a catalyst for urban metamorphosis.    Designed to reflect the heritage and pride of the territory, the stadium will act as a ‘lighthouse’ for the region, attracting and hosting not only the fans, but all types of visitors beyond match days.   The iconic bandage of the Quattro Mori, truly charaterises the design and becomes a customisable skin that surrounds the structure of the bowl. Using the latest innovation in materials and digital technology, the proposed design will ensure the stadium is durable over time and flexible in capacity, whilst optimising both function and cost.    The proposed design will create a spectacular landmark that is recognisable from the city and the sea, for fans and the local community. A true ‘lighthouse’ that could not arise anywhere else in Italy, or even the world.

CityLife Piazza Tre Torri becomes a vibrant and integral part of Milan

We are pleased to announce that our CityLife Piazza Tre Torri project opened to the city today with the official opening of the accompanying Shopping District. Our newly designed public space will now become a vibrant and integral part of Milan.   The plaza now joins the urban park, also designed by One Works together with Gustafson Porter, as the new and important dialogue between the CityLife district and the city of Milan. As urban designers, it is always important to start with a very clear vision and in this case, it was to respond to the contemporary complexity of the district, to enhance the opportunities for dialogue between the different spaces and the different levels, as well as accommodate a wide range of public activities.   The design stems from varying functions of its location, or rather of its spatial distribution, and the desire to create a single public place made up of two open spaces at different levels. The newly opened retail district, strongly characterized in part by the fashion mall at the base of the Hadid tower, with the outdoor commercial activity distributed around the plaza and along the pathway towards Piazza VI Febbraio, permit the public square to open itself up to the city. Hence, the project's strong urban character.   The contemporary configuration highlights three important aspects. Firstly, it establishes an East-West relationship, which correlates Piazza VI Febbraio with the commercial podium of the Hadid Tower. Secondly, provides a relationship with the park's southern and northern parts. And finally, the central Tre Torre Plaza is a meeting place of the two busy public trails through that part of the city. The complexity of the site, also meant that the urban space had to be designed to accommodate the horizontal movement flows network with the superimposed vertical system, linking all three towers and the two plaza levels with the metro station underneath.   Click here for more information on the project.
