Bologna Guglielmo Marconi International Airport (BLQ): Passenger Terminal Extension

Bridging the capacity gap through effective design

Bologna G. Marconi airport is witnessing a major expansion due to the increase of destinations served and passenger traffic. Consequently, to the airports’ integration with the High Speed Railway network, through an automated people mover system, considerable advantages will occur in the next few years.

In this context, One Works has carried out the Passenger Terminal extension and refurbishment design, with a targeted traffic as high as 6 millions. The sharp traffic growth rate necessitated fast track design in order to comply with comfort and safety requirements. Concept to detailed design phases took advantage of accelerated procedures ensuring detailed design deliverance in perfect timing to meet the client’s requirements.

Bridging the capacity gap

These completed works permit the airport to bridge the capacity gap between the current offer and the commissioning of a new terminal, which will allow airport traffic to reach 11 million passengers/year. As a consequence, global project objectives refer to the available areas full efficiency within the Terminal, and a better use of the Terminal operational systems; this will ensure the optimization of present day capacity, while keeping to a minimum the need for further expansion. The allocated capacity rate assessed, with the use of specific IATA handbook guidelines, permits to verify if the service level for passenger circulation remains above specified threshold levels at all times.

Generating commercial opportunities

The project not only concerns functional design aspects, it will generate additional commercial opportunities in the airside area whilst consolidating those currently on landside through refurbishment. The Terminal renovation permits for a single building with a series of characterizing elements namely materials, use of natural light, and uniform path finding signage. As a result, passengers will be provided with high level comfort, owing to the possibility of being safely guided through a large space, with an over all friendly ambience.

Given the patchwork nature of expansion, construction phases are oriented at maximizing the present day and future capacity situations while reducing operational disruptions. A stepwise approach will concede newly built areas to enter into exercise before the entire intervention is completed. Although complex in terms of schedule design, this approach will allow coping with demand peaks at specific periods.
