An urban redevelopment of an old industrial gasworks site into a vibrant mixed-use community, whilst preserving the historical nature of the area. One Works already designed a number of masterplans for the redevelopment of three complex sites within the Venetian Basin, as part of wider City Development Program. Each masterplan provided a series of mixed-use developments comprising a new class of office, residential and retail space for the local areas.
For Ostiense, a detailed Masterplan was developed to support a feasibility study for the redevelopment of an old industrial site in the area. The 12,000sqm site was previously home to a gas factory dating back to the 1910’ and was repurposed for a number of uses until its recent dismantling.
The context of the masterplan is characterised by the presence of pre-existing elements, including the Tiber River; urban agglomeration; railway infrastructure; and a number of industrial buildings such as the large gas holder. In order to preserve the historical nature of the site and the local area, our design proposal aimed to integrate a number of mixed-use buildings, whilst sensitively restoring a number of the industrial elements of the site.
