“The unwavering courage and resilience of the Ukrainian people are truly inspiring”.
During a recent visit to Mykolaïv in Ukraine, Leonardo Cavalli, Silvia Botti, and Francesca Pintus witnessed the community’s remarkable strength. They were part of a joint UNECE / One Works Foundation delegation invited to meet with Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevich and City Council Chairman Dmytro Falko to explore the city and discuss the concept masterplan and pilot projects for sustainable urban development.
The visit was a key component of the #UN4UkrainianCities project, which aims to enhance urban planning and attract investment in sustainable infrastructure. It also allowed the team to review the blueprint for post-conflict reconstruction, green infrastructure integration, and economic revitalization.
The team visited key areas of Mykolaiv, including the historic city center, the Flots’kyi Boulevard waterfront, the Shipyard site, and the House of Naval Officers. These visits provided insights into the city’s character and opportunities for revitalization. Recognizing the value of the city’s green spaces, the team discussed the importance of integrating nature into urban development plans.
Thank you also to the courageous individuals leading Ukraine’s resistance and shaping its hopeful future, including Tetiana Shulichenko and Yevhen Poliakov from the city council and Artem Vashchylenko, Executive Director at UABSC. Also, thanks to Carlo Formasa, Italian Ambassador in Ukraine; Jakob Hansen, Head of the Danish Embassy Office in Mykolaiv; Paola Deda, Director of Forests, Land and Housing at UNECE; Thamara Fortes, UN4Ukrainian Cities Project Manager at UNECE; Melanie Steinkemper, Urban Development Specialist at UNECE; Enkel Leskaj, Programme Management Assistant at UNECE; and Jesper Karup Pedersen and Albina Shuyska from COWI for joining us on this journey.
The visit marked a significant step in transforming the concept masterplan into actionable projects. The UNECE and One Works Foundation remain committed to collaborating with Mykolaiv to build a sustainable future for the city and its residents.
We’re pleased to officially submit the Mykolaiv Concept Masterplan to the Mayor of Mykolaiv, during the Ukraine Recovery Conference, for final city council approval.
The “Build Back Better – A vision for Mykolaïv” workshop was hosted in Milan, with the participation of Oleksandr Syenkevc, Mayor of Mykolaïv.
