As part of SACBO’s strategic development plan for Bergamo Orio al Serio Airport, Oneworks, in temporary consortium with Steam Srl, delivered the final design and construction supervision of two new logistics buildings located in the airport’s northern area.
The project supports a long-term vision to separate cargo and passenger traffic flows, easing congestion in the southern area near the terminal and enhancing overall airport functionality. In alignment with the Airport Development Plan (PSA), the new buildings accommodate current freight operations while being structurally designed to allow for future conversion into aircraft hangars.
A defining feature of the project is the use of 64-meter spanning laminated wood trusses, an uncommon and bold structural solution for this building type. These timber elements offer high technical performance and contribute to a unique architectural character, demonstrating how expressive materiality and robust engineering can work in harmony.
Each building comprises a large-span warehouse structure supported by prefabricated reinforced concrete frames and complemented by a five-level office block. The north-facing administrative components include dedicated areas for systems and services, with rooftop levels housing plant equipment.
Together, the buildings contribute over 41,000 square meters of high-performance infrastructure to support the airport’s expanding freight logistics, while offering adaptability for future operational needs.
