With Bergamo Orio Airport and upcoming links to the European rail network, Bergamo is on the path to transforming and expanding its public transport network. A key part of this urban transformation is the 80-million euro Bergamo Station, designed to create new connections at both local and regional levels, combining urban design, technical innovation, and environmental sustainability.
Designed in a collaboration between team leaders NET Engineering and architects Cino Zucchi Architetti and One Works, the project aims to enhance public spaces that connect educational and healthcare facilities along Via Gavazzeni and Via Europa to the northern parts of the city. It also focuses on preserving and renovating existing buildings associated with the railway. It includes constructing a new station building, a tunnel connecting the platforms, platform coverings, pedestrian overpasses, and other access facilities. Plans are also in place to refurbish Marconi square and the historic passenger building.
The new passenger building is designed for functionality and safety and blends seamlessly with its urban surroundings. It features two glass structures under a protective canopy roof, making a bold architectural statement. This design, together with an effective palette of materials and finishes, successfully blends new and historical elements of the urban fabric, linking different parts of the city.
