With Bergamo Orio Airport and upcoming links to the European rail network, Bergamo is on the path to transforming and expanding its public transport network. A key part of this urban transformation is the 80-million euro Bergamo Station, designed to create new connections at both local and regional levels, combining urban design, technical innovation, and environmental sustainability.
Designed by NET Engineering, with consultancy for the architectural design and the station layout by Cino Zucchi Architetti and Oneworks, the project focuses on the creation of public spaces that link educational and healthcare activities along Via Gavazzeni and Via Europa to the northern part of the city, while preserving and restoring existing railway-related buildings.
The intervention combines restoration and new construction: the historic station building is preserved, while a new station wing is added. A pedestrian bridge over the tracks heals the former “urban wound,” reconnecting the city and ensuring safe, direct access to the platforms. The project also includes a connecting tunnel between platforms, platform canopies, and other access facilities.
