One of the most important shopping centre in Lombardy and in the Milan area, located in a strategic position on Milan’s ring road, the centre offers a unique mix of national and international retailers at the forefront of today’s trends and is a very popular destination in its catchment – attracted over 8 million shoppers a year.
Designed by One Works, the Carosello, like the vast majority of shopping centres, is characterized by large horizontal surfaces. This aspect, associated with the air conditioning and lighting of the interior spaces, effectively gave shape to the project.
A large green area of over 16,000 m2 was created as a roof for the building. The roof is thus transformed into a large green lawn the size of two football fields which allows for the regulation of exchanges between inside and outside, reducing the consumption of mechanical air conditioning. The casing becomes a heat flywheel which reduces and distributes the temperature differences between inside and outside over time, producing oxygen. The greater the built-up area, the greater the green area.
The other element that characterizes the scheme is the size of the internal public spaces. The gallery has heights that reach 10 meters and so do the shop windows and other businesses hosted.
The shopping arcade is naturally lit by 71 large cones, ranging in size from 3 to 7 meters in diameter, reducing the use of artificial light. The lesser use of artificial lighting also makes it possible to reduce the mechanical cooling caused by the heat given off by the lamps. The cones act as pores by regulating the exchange of light between inside and outside and their orientation avoids direct radiation, favoring the diffusion of light. The cones allow you to see the sky and maintain a direct relationship with natural agents and the seasons. The shopping arcade works as a climatic buffer, capable of recreating a temperate climate in which to stroll with the sensation of being outdoors.
The Carosello Car Park extension and renovation asked for architectural, civil and structural engineering, and site supervision services.
The shopping center car park is the visitors’ first shopping experience; therefore natural light and adequate height, as well as simple and clearly legible circulation, were the goals of this design. Due to the retail’s expansion, an increase demand for parking resulted in the provision of another 50,000 sqm, with a global offer reaching 3,700 car stalls.
The revised accessibility necessary for the Carosello Shopping Center asked for traffic studies, transport planning, design, and site supervision services. One Works developed a series of ancillary activities, including access road design as well as traffic and parking studies with the help of a specific traffic simulator.
