Known as the “City of Ships” since its foundation, Mykolaiv has historically focused on the naval industry as its main economic driver. In recent years, however, especially during the conflict, the shipbuilding sector has been facing a sharp decline, leading Mykolaiv to conceive new ways of capitalising on its waterfront. Benefiting from a favorable location in proximity to the Black Sea, the city maintains strong ties with its rivers and is ready to build itself back better.
The new Aquaport Marina in Mykolaiv is set to become the centerpiece of the Deep Blue Transition for Mykolaiv Programme. This initiative, led by the All-Ukrainian Public Organisation UABSC – Ukrainian Association of Business Support Centers, with support from the European Union and the UN Development Programme Mayors for Economic Growth, aims to revitalise the city’s Blue Economy.
Designed to blend sustainable design with practical functionality, the Aquaport Marina will respect Mykolaiv’s rich shipbuilding heritage while offering recreational spaces and leisure opportunities for both residents and tourists. Key features of the new marina include:
Additional planned developments outside the immediate project boundaries include a family hotel, a hotel and restaurant, a pontoon, a public beach, a secondary marina with a safety boat station, a terrace, boat storage, berths, a School of Higher Sportsmanship, an all-sustainable riverfront promenade, a pedestrian beach and road bridge.
The development is designed to promote inclusivity, economic growth and environmental care. It will ultimately bring together a wide range of people and activities, boost the local economy by enhancing shipping services and improve water transport links across the city. The project commits to high environmental standards, using smart technologies to manage resources efficiently and ensuring all buildings are LEED or BREEAM certified. This approach seeks to create a sustainable center for the Mykolaiv community and its visitors.
