Santa Chiara University Hospital

The present day Santa Chiara hospital complex presents a typical layout responding to sanitary norms and by laws, with detached pavilions symmetrically arranged around a central garden.

Opening up the enclave to the city, to host its new functions, requires the creation new public spaces in sequence granting pedestrian and vehicular accessibility to buildings. The proposal extends the winding axes of the historical city into the masterplan area with the aim to generate two elongated public squares under the imposing presence of the nearby Piazza dei Miracoli, rescaling the oversized complex into four urban blocks of diverse character.
