One Works was appointed for a detailed feasibility and conceptual design for the redevelopment of two office buildings and related common areas in Sesto San Giovanni – an area adjacent to the continuously developing multi-purpose district of Bicocca, in Milan.
The extensive renovation project completely rethinks the existing outdated buildings from the point of view of architectural, distribution and energy quality, restoring a new contemporary complex to the urban fabric. A new transparent volume between the ground floor buildings represents the new center of gravity of connection to the city, offering common work, lounge and restaurant spaces facing the large internal garden.
The vertical distribution has been rethought and strengthened to adapt to the new standards and above all the flexibility of the internal office spaces as well as the system of fronts, to adapt them to the current needs for energy saving and acoustic insulation. The new double-glazed facade optimises the transparency and opacity ratio of the envelope and allows continuous visibility with the external environment. A screen outlined by a continuous rhythm of extruded anodised aluminium rounds is superimposed on the façade modules which give vibration and lightness to the new face of the complex, as well as contributing to the necessary solar shading.
The recovery and reuse of the large roof terraces offers new spaces with the possibility of outdoor activities, co-working, informal meetings and events, configuring itself as a decisive added value of the intervention.
The improvement of the energy efficiency of buildings is essential with the aim of achieving standards of excellence – LEED Gold certified.
