One Works was appointed to develop a detailed feasibility and concept design for contemporary student accommodation strategically located in a polygonal plot area on the northern side of Turin, overlooking the Dora Riparia river and a short walking distance from the city centre.
The hotel is located on a prominent site sitting on the main axis connecting the city centre with the highway infrastructure towards Milan, offering an extraordinary opportunity to design a unique destination. Visitors can approach the site either on foot, bike, public transportation or by car.
The upcoming new metro station on the eastern side, together with the existing tram stations along Corso Giulio Cesare and the bike/pedestrian mobility, will generate multiple people flows, accessing the site from all sides. The complex nature of the site is represented by the current grade level which, for a certain length, is lowered by a few meters compared with the adjacent sloped streets towards West and South. The South-West side is characterized by a densely tree-lined riverscape.
The proposed design envisages a permeable and flexible block with a strong identity, whilst introducing new seamless connections and tight relationships with the old city that surrounds it.
The definition of space proportions and building masses relations, together with the enhancement and generation of urban connections and environmental features, are the combined elements contributing to determine a vibrant, unique and human-scale urban destination.
The proposed masterplan entails a comprehensive vision for this mixed-use development hopefully meeting the promoter’s aspirations to provide the community with a new place to live, learn, study, work, meet, create, discover and engage.
A barycentric seamless foyer/lounge, next to the crossing public passageway and the bikes storage, encompasses all the main functions of the venue and provides separate fluid accesses to the restaurant, the co-working areas, the university building, the student hotel amenities (gym, leisure area, classrooms, rooftop pool, etc.) and the upper floors with the student hotel rooms.
This new inner “plaza”, a place where people gather, meet, discuss, educate, work, learn, relax, enjoy, becomes an easy-to-use everyday destination for students, guests, employees and citizens. A new anchor for the city and a place able to facilitate and strengthen the sense of community within students, guests and Turin citizens in general. A generous co-working space with a spectacular seating steps sunken auditorium wraps around the inner green courtyard, being visually connected to the main entrance, the restaurant, the gym area and the leisure and gaming area
