Our proposal for the expansion of Vilnius Airport, as part of an international design competition, envisions the terminal as more than just a transit space; it is a modern gateway that reflects the identity of Vilnius, enhances connectivity, and delivers a calm, intuitive, and inclusive travel experience. Guided by interconnected principles, the design prioritises a first-class passenger experience, operational efficiency, and architectural quality. At its core lie three fundamental values: comfort and engagement, integrated connectivity with the city, and a commitment to environmental responsibility. These principles come together to shape an airport that is not only efficient but also human, green, and future-ready.
The project addresses the airport’s evolution across multiple scales: urban, architectural, and human.
At the urban scale, the terminal acts as a keystone in a broader strategy that links the airport to the city of Vilnius and its surrounding infrastructure. It considers all forms of movement: train, bus, private car, taxi, bicycle, and scooter to ensure seamless multimodal connectivity and efficient passenger flow.
At the architectural scale, the design unifies the existing terminals by preserving the heritage of T1, integrating T2 through T4, and introducing a new T5 terminal building and the “Plaza”. This new composition anchors passenger movement while expressing a strong civic identity. The architecture combines modern expression with local inspiration, using daylit atria, curved rooflines drawn from vernacular forms, and façades that respond to the orientation and climate. The result is a coherent architectural language that is flexible, expandable, and deeply connected to its context.
At the human scale, every element, from pathways to public spaces, is designed to be intuitive, inclusive, and welcoming for travellers, staff, and visitors alike. Accessibility has been considered and integrated right from the very beginning of the project, fostering an environment that supports all users. Play areas, quiet zones, and clear wayfinding ensure that the space is functional and humane.
A key move in the proposal is the removal of outdated structures to create space for a coherent, future-facing identity. The new T5 terminal is designed as a series of four linear volumes that clearly organise functions while allowing modular expansion over time. Its curved roof profile is inspired by Lithuanian architecture and accommodates light-filled atriums. Natural light becomes a guiding element, shaping flows and elevating comfort across the terminal.
The façade treatment responds to both orientation and energy demands: the south façade provides shading to reduce overheating, while the north side offers shelter and comfort. Together, these elements create a visual identity that is both memorable and scalable; a true gateway to Vilnius that resonates with the city’s values.
The terminal is conceived as a low-carbon, climate-resilient, and health-promoting infrastructure, aligned with international standards such as LEED, BREEAM, and WELL. The sustainability strategy is built around four pillars: decarbonisation, the use of circular and low-impact materials, adaptation to climate change, and the promotion of health, wellness, and social inclusion.
The airport is reimagined as a fully integrated mobility hub, seamlessly combining intercity bus, rail, private vehicles, taxis, bicycles, and scooters. A new intercity bus station, along with clearly defined pedestrian connections, enhances the public transport experience and improves the flow of all users.
Wayfinding is designed to be intuitive, inclusive, and adaptable. A combination of clear signage, colour-coded zones, and universally recognisable icons ensures effortless navigation. Digital tools, including interactive screens, provide real-time updates and personalised directions. The modular signage system is designed for easy reconfiguration, ensuring the terminal remains efficient and navigable as it evolves over time.
