The Mazara del Vallo Porto Canale project is an ambitious urban development initiative aimed at revitalising the historic riverfront on the eastern bank of the Mazaro River. Once the heart of the largest fishing fleet in the Mediterranean, the Porto Canale area has experienced significant physical and economic decay over time. With an investment of nearly €4 million, the Municipality of Mazara del Vallo is leading a revitalisation plan in collaboration with One Works to restore vibrancy to the area and stimulate its economic growth.
Historical Context
The Mazaro River has played a vital role in Mazara del Vallo’s history, serving as a natural port for centuries. It was a crucial trading hub during the Middle Ages, fostering commercial connections with North Africa and the wider Mediterranean region. In the 1950s, the arrival of motor fishing boats and onboard ice production led to a rapid expansion of the local fishing fleet, which peaked at over 400 vessels. However, with the development of Porto Nuovo, much of the fleet relocated, leading to a decline in both the physical infrastructure and economic activity of the Porto Canale. Over time, the area fell into disrepair, contributing to the degradation of the surrounding urban fabric.
A critical aspect of the redevelopment project is its focus on environmental sustainability. The restored port will prioritise sustainable fishing practices and the surrounding areas will adopt eco-friendly infrastructure solutions. New green spaces will enhance the urban environment, while pedestrianisation and reduced vehicular traffic will help lower the city’s carbon footprint.
The project also includes plans to improve the ecological health of the Mazaro River, with initiatives focused on water quality improvement, waste management, and erosion control. This will ensure that the river remains a natural resource for future generations.
