Preliminary design for the extensive refurbishment and extension of Verona Villafranca Airport. The expansion project has been designed to meet a range of the operators’ goals, including increased interconnectivity between the existing departures and arrivals terminals; increase the terminal size to accommodate the expected increase in passenger flows and operations; as well as the introduction of a modular solution that will allow for easy expansion in the future.
The project was also seen as an opportunity to improve the architectural language of the terminal buildings and to increase the visibility of airport services to improve the passenger experience. To achieve these objectives, One Works proposed two terminal building extensions (11,500m2) across two levels, both on the landside and airside, to provide a direct relationship between the existing volumes and to introduce a series of minor reconfigurations within the existing spaces.
Essential to the project, user experience, and terminal operations, the proposed programme of works has been designed with seamless passenger processing at its core. All boarding, check-in and activities will continue to operate unhindered throughout the construction process. The carefully staged design and delivery will accommodate these activities, maintaining essential operations and continued retail trading.
At the first floor, the new building extension will host the relocated security gates providing an increased number of security control workstations and a new boarding area served by 3 boarding bridges. These new facilities were designed to solve the critical issues, whereby a concentration of all functional subsystems and spacial limitations on the ground floor was leading to a decay in passenger service levels, particularly during peak hours. In addition to optimizing the airport’s existing spaces and improving operations, crucial areas on the ground floor will be liberated to dramatically enlarge boarding areas for Schengen and non-Schengen passengers, both for improved passenger comfort and increasing commercial opportunities.
Back in 2015, One Works successfully led the detailed design for the extensive refurbishment and upgrade of the retail component at Verona Villafranca Airport —a considerable undertaking in time and scope.
The project involved a substantial redevelopment of the departure hall of the terminal building to create a world-class retail environment for travelers. Building on our experience in retail and transport projects, the design interweaves a series of public spaces, walk-through duty-free, specialty retail, and food and beverage outlets.
